Medicaid coverage for children
Medicaid provides health coverage to more than 30 million children. It also covers families, pregnant women, the elderly and disabled.
Medicaid is available in all states. Although there are variations in the program of each state, all states provide Medicaid for babies and children under 6 years old, with a household income up to 133 percent of the federal poverty level ($ 29,725 for a family of four in 2011 ). Medicaid is available for children under 19 whose income at the poverty level ($ 22,350 for a family of four) of even age.
Medicaid covers a full range of comprehensive services for children (under 21 years), including preventive care, immunizations, screening and treatment of health problems, medical and hospital visits, and vision and dental care. In most cases, these services are free.
More than two million children in Medicaid are considered "medically complex" with costly demands highly specialized. Although these medically complex children account for only six percent of all children enrolled in Medicaid, which represent over 40 percent of all Medicaid spending on children.
Medicaid costs are shared by the federal and state level. As the state budget deficit and the number of Medicaid beneficiaries both increased, state legislators across the country continue to push the fiscal measures that include cuts to Medicaid. This year alone, 41 states have sought to freeze or reduce payments to Medicaid providers (doctors, hospitals, hospitalized patients, dentists, etc.)
